What is MT940?
MT940 is a SWIFT text format for bank account statements. Numbered tags describe the account, opening and closing balances, and individual statement lines.
The converter reads :61: transaction lines and preserves multiline :86: descriptions. Credit, debit and reversal markers determine the amount sign. Bank-specific description subfields remain as supplied.

What the workbook includes
Your MT940 statement becomes an Excel workbook with a Transactions sheet and available statement metadata. Dates and ordinary monetary amounts use native cell types; values beyond Excel’s precision limit stay as text.
Missing fields stay empty. No exchange rates are applied, and text that could be interpreted as a spreadsheet formula is neutralized.

Common questions
How are MT940 booking dates and reversals handled?
An optional MMDD booking date uses the year nearest its value date. Two-digit years use 1970–2069. Reversal-of-credit entries become negative amounts and reversal-of-debit entries become positive amounts. When a booking date is absent, its cell stays empty.
How do I open a MT940 file in Excel?
Excel has no built-in MT940 import, so opening the file directly shows raw statement data instead of a transaction table. Choose the file in the converter above, check the preview, then download the Excel file. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice with one row per transaction.
Are my bank files uploaded anywhere?
No. Files are read and converted in your browser. Neither the original file nor the converted data is sent to a server.
Is the converter free to use?
Yes. All supported conversions are free, with no account or subscription required.
Can I convert a PDF bank statement?
PDFs, screenshots, CSV inputs and Excel inputs are not supported. Download a CAMT.053, MT940, OFX, QFX, QBO or QIF export from your bank instead.
Will the exported amounts be rounded?
Amounts are kept as exact decimal strings during conversion and in CSV. Excel has a 15-digit numeric precision limit, so values that exceed safe limits are exported as text. No currency conversion or balance estimation is performed.
